SIXTY-TWO

Gideon Vale waved a hand in front of him as he drove, trying to waft away the smoke drifting from Sean Doyle's cigarette.

Doyle glanced at his companion then took another drag on the Rothmans.

“All right, don't panic,” Doyle grunted. “I've nearly finished.”

“It's a filthy habit,” Vale snapped, dismissively.

“So, you're perfect are you, Vale? No bad habits?”

“Not antisocial ones like smoking.”

“Oh, fuck off. You're like an old woman, moaning all the time.” He took another drag. “It relaxes me.”

Vale raised his eyebrows.

“What do you do to relax?” the older man wanted to know.

“I have the odd joint now and again,” Vale confessed.

“Fuck me. You're bellyaching about me smoking this and you're into drugs?”

“Cannabis isn't a drug.”

“It's illegal.”

“It used to be used as a pain killer. It still is in many places. It's legal in lots of States in America.”

“But we're not in the States, are we? So, don't criticise my smoking when you're a fucking pothead.”

“Doyle, you really are so far out of touch, you're practically on a different planet.”

“What do you do when you really want to relax? Shoot up? Snort some cocaine?”

“Now you're being ridiculous.”

“They're all drugs.”

“Marijuana grows naturally on the planet.”

“So, does fucking cactus but you don't smoke it do you?”

“Actually, peyote is made from cactus and that's an hallucinogenic.”

“So, we finally found a subject you're interested in.”

“So, what do you do to relax, Doyle? Get drunk? Smoke extra cigarettes?” Vale grinned.

“I watch TV. Not that it's any of your fucking business.”

“Listen to music?”

“Sometimes.”

“What kind?”

“Rock music. What do you like?”

“I like Coldplay.”

Doyle snorted.

“Fucking lift music,” he said, smiling.

“And I like RnB. Some Grime. Depends on my mood.”

“Remind me never to borrow your record collection.”

“I've got everything on my phone. It's all digital. If you weren't so old, you'd know that. It's all about convenience now, Doyle.”

“Downloads. Streaming. All that bollocks?”

Vale drove on, finally glancing at Doyle again.

“So why do you think Callahan left Demko alive?” he said, finally.

“Who knows how his mind works?” Doyle murmured.

“You got as close to him as anyone. I thought you might have an idea.”

“I don't think trying to kill him counts as getting close, does it? What about you? How much do you know about him?”

“Only what I read in the files. Multi-millionaire. Made his fortune running guns. Obsessed with the occult.”

“And immortality.”

“Who wouldn't want to live forever?”

“That depends.”

“On what?”

“On what kind of world you're living in.”

“I also read the reports on your debriefing. You know, what happened the first time you were sent after him. What you did and saw that night at Callahan's place in Ireland. Some of it makes for pretty interesting reading.”

“I'm not even sure what I saw.”

“A demon?”

Vale couldn't resist a smile.

Doyle saw the expression and shot him an angry glance.

“Callahan's wife was killed that night, wasn't she?”

Doyle nodded.

“Her and a few others,” he sighed.

“Like your partner?” Vale enquired.

“You read the reports. You know what happened,” Doyle snapped.

“You shouldn't blame yourself, Doyle. She knew the risks. She was a professional like you.”

“Thanks for the expert guidance, now stop the car.
